For our Wentzscope, I like to use really common and familiar items (that are also cheap and easy to come by). One of my favorite things is a piece of nylon stocking. Also very cool are sugar and salt. If you don't mind doing it, I've cut my own fingernails and used those, and compared them to the clippings from my cat's claw. My cat also has large and easy to find whiskers when she sheds them, so I've got a couple of those in there to compare with human hair (grey or blonde work best). If you ever swat and kill a fly, save the wing...that is extrememly cool-looking under the scope.

good luck!

Subject: Microscopic favorites?

What's your favorite thing to look at under a microscope?

I have an old Wentzscope and would like to replace the 12 slides I
have currently. Rather than focusing on a theme (e.g., insects), I
thought it would be more fun to have a collection of slides that are
particularly interesting, cool, or surprising. (The exhibit is about the
skill of observation.)

While I welcome all suggestions, I will not be able to include
living things or things that visitors bring in (that microscope is in
the neighboring exhibit). The magnification of the scope is 125x.

Thanks for your ideas!
