ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

Hi everyone,
The Franklin Institute in partnership with Pennsylvania State University and
NSF are offering a free program to interested museums who will be selected
to participate upon review of application:
What does the program entail?
The program includes 6 demonstrations with a focus on biology and nano scale
science. Scientists at Penn State and around the world are studying how the
body works on the molecular level to create new technology. Each activity
will first show the science of the body on a nano-scale level and then speak
to how scientists are using that science to create new technology.
Interested parties will be trained at the Franklin Institute Science Museum
in Philadelphia PA. Penn State University and The Franklin Institute will be
responsibly for all travel expenses. Training for this program will probably
occur in late February, depending on schedules.
Participants will then receive all supplies for to perform the program for 1
year for a minimum of 10 hours a week. After one year has passed museums are
then responsible for supplying all consumable materials if they wish to
continue the program.
Hands-on activities include:
∑ What is “nano”?
Goal: To help visitors understand what nano is.
∑ DNA: The Building Blocks
Goal: Visitors will learn about self-assembly by exploring at DNA
∑ Membranes: The Gate Keepers
Goal: Visitors will understand how membranes will allows some things through
but keep others out.
∑ Antibodies: Playing Favorites
Goal: Visitors will understand why certain molecules attach to one another
but others don’t by examining antibodies.
∑ Retinal: The Power Of Light
Goal: Visitors will learn how outside factors like sunlight can create
chemical reactions by using the chemical retinal and how we see.
∑ Biological Motors: The Movers And Shakers
Goal: Visitors will learn how chemicals are moved in specific directions
using the Brownian motion biological as an example.
How are museums selected to receive the program?
Once all applications are received the members of the Penn State - Franklin
Institute partnership will review the applications and choose 20 museums to
receive the program. If your museum is not chosen please note that the
program will also be available for sale at cost towards the end of 2005
early 2006.
The following criteria will be used to select the museums that will receive
the program:
∑ Interest: Based on the museums timely response to the questions on
the application. This could be fit into existing programs or a hole in your
existing programs you wish to fill.
∑ Commitment: Museums who can honestly commit more time to the program
will be favored. Staff hours on the floor will be considered with this
answer.
∑ Size An equal number of small (<100,000), Medium (100,000 to
500,000) and large (>500,000) will be chosen.
∑ Location: Museums chosen will be spread out across the country.
∑ Need: This can vary but should be addressed when answering how and
why you would use this program in your museum.
What does your museum need to provide for the program?
Your museum must provide a completed application form by Feb16 21st, 2005.
Your museum must provide a minimum of 10 hours a week to perform the program
to your museum audience for one year after receiving the program.
Your museum will need to provide a location that has a table or cart with
nearby electrical outlet.
Participating museums must conduct quarterly surveys with pictures. These
will be used by the Franklin Institute/Penn State to evaluate and improve
the program.
We are asking museums to provide a laptop or computer at the location for an
accompanying DVD. If you are unable to provide a computer The Franklin
Institute/Penn State are considering providing a small number of laptops for
those who receive the program based on financial need.
