ISEN-ASTC-L is a service of the Association of Science-Technology Centers
Incorporated, a worldwide network of science museums and related institutions.

We have developed a program called Soap Box to address late-breaking
cutting edge (and controversial!!!) issues. Soap Box is a monthly
series of mid-week, early evening 'salon-style' conversations on
topical issues in science and technology. Each Soap Box event
comprises: (1) a personal profile of the chosen speaker (an MIT
faculty member) in the Health and Science section of the Boston Globe
(Monday); (2) an event here in the MIT Museum on either the Tuesday
or the Wednesday of the same week; and (3) an online chat to engage
an even wider audience. The event in the Museum comprises a 20 minute
presentation by the guest speaker, followed by discussion of key
issues raised. Our aim is to cultivate informed public debate about
important scientific and technological issues. Our target audience
is not necessarily familiar with all the latest research, but they
are a well-informed and interested group of (primarily) adults, and
there is every opportunity for a lively and productive discussion.
We've had several and the attendance is quite good. Of course, our
ace in the hole is that we are part of MIT and have access to the
researchers, but it's something that can be done in partnership with
local universities.
