Weeding our national garden: Using NASA's resources to help control invasive species in the U.S.
NASA and the US Geological Survey are preparing to unveil a first ever "Invasive Species Forecasting System". The system is helping in the national fight against invasive species by predicting their habitat throughout the country and areas where they are likely to invade. This is being done by combining the latest advances in remote sensing, computing, and spatial modeling technologies. The presentation will describe how a time series of vegetation data are being summarized through phenology metrics as well as how these summary metrics are used to create regional maps of habitat suitability. A national map of tamarisk (tamarix, salt cedar) habitat is presented as an example.
ESMA participants have an unprecedented opportunity to learn about this undisclosed initiative prior to a scheduled press release February 15th
