Here's several types of projects you may want to look into regarding
students working directly with scientists:
1. Citizen science projects, where students & others gather data as part of
a research project -- data is actually used by researchers (e.g., bird
counts, migration patterns, etc.) Examples are the projects carried out by
Cornell Lab of Ornithology, Monarchwatch, etc., you'll find many references if you
google.
2. Various research internships. The U.S. National Science Foundation used
to support summer "young scholars" programs, 6-week summer research
internships. You will still find many such programs, mostly for high school
students, at universities.
3. The U.S. National Institutes of Health has funded a variety of projects,
some involving students working with scientists, through its "Science
Education Partnership Awards" (SEPA) program. If you google that, you'll probably
find some good examples.
4. There are also various natural history museums that have students work
as research assistants in fossil prep, on digs, etc.
5. Earthwatch also involves students in various environmental research
projects.
