I for one agree that this is one kind of outreach that archaeologists
should be considering (along with gaming companies, television writers,
novelists, etc.) And of course we have professional cartoonists among our
peers already (e.g., Jannie Loubser, Trent de Boer). For those of you who
may have missed it, the November 05 SAA Archaeological Record was devoted
to cartoons (go to
http://www.saa.org/Publications/theSAAarchRec/nov05.pdf). Mitch Allen has a
great article in that issue on using cartoons for teaching archaeology.

Note: a few years ago Angelina Jolie (a UN Peoples' Ambassador as well as a
portrayer of Laura Croft) was a speaker at the National Council for the
Social Studies conference. She stopped by the SAA booth in the exhibit hall
and talked for a few minutes with the archaeologists.

On another note, a few years ago at AAA the author of the Clan of the Cave
Bears series was very up-front on where and how the profession routinely
failed to convey their research to the public -- leaving the door open for
the non-professional, be it good or bad.
