	GENERAL POSITION DESCRIPTION: Under the direction of the
Archeology Survey Team Leader, the Project Archeologist is responsible
for coordinating the work of Crew Chiefs and Crew Members on
archeological field survey, testing, and excavation projects conducted
by the Archeology Survey Team. Assists Principal Investigator in
planning and executing research designs. Conducts field investigations
under the direction of Archeology Survey Team Leader. Responsibilities
include site recording, monitoring of construction excavations, mapping,
laboratory processing and cataloging, and artifact analysis. Collects
archeological data via Global Positioning System, and compiles
Geographic Information System site maps and databases. Writes major
sections and edits archeological reports, ensuring that they meet the
specifications of the Antiquities Code of Texas. Synthesizes
archeological data for inclusion in Cultural Resource Management Plans.
Presents Archeology Laboratory outreach activities to the public.
Performs additional duties as assigned. Complies with all Agency,
Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

	WORKING CONDITIONS: (1) Outdoor work in all seasons and weather
conditions; occasionally will require work hours other than 8:00 A.M. to
5:00 P.M. Monday through Friday; (2) Non-smoking environment in state
office buildings and vehicles.

	MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

	Education: Graduation from an accredited four-year college or
university with a degree in Anthropology or Archeology.

	Experience: Ten years of experience in archeology, including
three years of leading field investigation teams.

	Acceptable Substitutions: Master's degree in Anthropology or
Archeology may substitute for two years of experience, excluding field
team leadership experience.

	License/Certifications: Must possess or be able to obtain,
within 30 days of employment, a Texas class "C" driver's license. NOTE:
Retention of the position is contingent upon obtaining and maintaining
the required license.

	SELECTION CRITERIA:

	Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: (1) Knowledge of data
collection techniques, archeological materials and tools, and laboratory
procedures necessary for performing archeological investigations and
analyses; (2) knowledge of Texas prehistoric and historic archeology;
(3) knowledge of microcomputers, word processing, and spreadsheet
software; and (4) knowledge of cultural resources management and
archeological site management.

	(5) Skill in direction of archeological site identification
and/or testing, and archeological field recording; (6) skill in
compilation of Geographic Information System site maps and data bases;
(7) skill in technical writing and editing; and (8) skill in effective
verbal and written communication.

	(9) Ability to work under limited supervision with moderate
latitude for use of initiative, and accomplish several tasks
simultaneously; (10) ability to coordinate the work of others; (11)
ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and using technical
writing skills; (12) ability to establish and maintain effective working
relationships; (13) ability to collect archeological field data via
Global Positioning System; and (14) ability to perform technical editing
and preparation of major research reports and management plans.

	Additional Requirements: (1) A vitae, recent technical writing
sample, and references are required to be attached to State of Texas
application, but will not be accepted in lieu of it, and will be used in
the selection process; (2) Copy of an official college transcript(s)
must be submitted with application.
