Spanish cob ...aka clip coin or bit coin...very common on the 1715  and
1622 plate fleet wreck site's and beach finds of the area of eastern
florida and not uncommon to find thru the mid to north eastern states as
well..very common coinage once legal tender in the us before the
starting of the us mint..appears to me to be a 6 reale based on the
size...clipping the 8 reale cob into 4 sections..gave us the term known
as 2 bits! Which now is the known as a quarter of dollar of today

This includes a photograph of a silver coin found in a test unit during
a Phase I/II investigation of an 18th-early 19th century domestic site
in southern Maryland.  We have some "hints" as to its date and origin,
but would appreciate the wisdom of others.  I suspect someone from the
Southeast US has come across similar artifacts.
