I believe one of the early edited volumes in HA was devoted to remote
sensing on historic-period sites, and discussed metal detectors,
especially in regard to locating concentrations of structural metal
(iron nails) as a way of finding structure locations within a site.  The
volume is 20 years old, or close to it, but it is one of the earliest
discussions of the subject.
