Hi,
Before becoming a grad student (again), I was Coordinator of Outreach
Services for the New York Aquarium in Brooklyn, NY for six years.
Like Kim, we did the second type of program where we went to
classrooms during school hours. However, we also went to libraries,
hospitals (for bedside activities), nursing homes, and community
centers. In addition, we did lots of after-school and pre-school
programs at schools. All of these programs were very, very popular.
The pre-k programs especially, since they were not able to come to
the aquarium due to travel restrictions. We tried to do station type
or auditorium programs, but they never really got off the ground
while I was there.
Outside of what I did, we also occasionally had family nights. The
local council person would sponsor neighborhood schools to come to
the aquarium for free. We, the education department, would set up
activity stations around the park for families to partake in. This
was also very well received.
Hope this is of help. If there are other questions, feel free to ask!
