I am currently working on an late 19th to early 20th c. African-American
farmstead in Tennessee, and I have run across a limestone outcropping on the
farm that appears to have been quarried for structural footers. I have
checked both the remaining footers and the outcropping for any obvious tool
markings without much success. However, I believe the farmers may have been
utilizing the natural joints in the limestone to quarry the footers without
much dressing or cutting of the stones. If anyone is familiar with
small-scale, non-commercial limestone quarrying or knows of any references
to this quarrying type, could you please contact me on the list or off-list
