I am working with a mom who is nursing her second baby. No problems with the first, but very sore nipples this time. I observed latch and positioning and they looked great. Baby is 6 days old, mom has good milk supply and there is audible swallowing. Upon examining the baby's mouth, I could feel "ridges" at the juncture of the soft and hard palate on each side of my finger. One ridge on each side so that I believe that the mom's nipple is being drawn in between the ridges and that is what is causing the pain. If this baby was bottle feeding, I suspect that nobody would even notice the ridges except a dentist when she is older.
Anyone have any thoughts or suggestions on how I can help this mom? Any advice or treatments would be greatly appreciated.
