Yesterday I listened again to the symphony of Hans Rott (composed around
1878-80). This pupil of Bruckner and student-friend of Mahler finished
this work 4 years before he died in an asylum. The work (I have the BIS-CD
with Segerstam and the Norkoepping SO) is quite nice, though it is a
puzzeling mixture of Wagner, Bruckner and Brahms (especially in the last
set) and misses a real personal style. Mahler apperently got the score
of this in 1890 and several people claim he was heavily influenced by it
(which I can not really see). Despite Mahlers praises of this work, it was
not performed before 1989! What are your impressions on this symphony?
