It was actually even sadder. A recital at the White House for President
Wilson caused him to miss a ship that would have taken him directly to
neutral Spain. Instead, he took a later ship to England, where he arrived
safely, transferring in Liverpool to the *Sussex* for Dieppe. The ship was
torpedoed in the Channel and Granados was picked up in a lifeboat. He saw
his wife struggling in the water and dived in to save her. Both of them
drowned.
