Google Metarhizium anisopliae and you will find that is not a single
fungus but there are many variants that are effective against specific
"pests". Based on pesticide regulations for several of the variants, it
appears some would be effective in killing bees, much less mites.
So, as Aaron notes, best to wait and see what shakes out from this.
Plus, do not attempt this at home. You could kill all your bees.
