Jason,

A Photomultiplier tube is designed to amplify available light. Typical uses include night vision scopes, etc. Sound units can be coupled with this type of tube or any light souce and coordinated with light color frequency and light levels. This will create a color organ, once very popular in nightclubs, etc.
