Graphite, but they used to be made of fiberglas and they would occasinally break.

Then there was the matter of the circus act at Ringling Bros about 30 years ago where a person would be set at the top of a fiberglas pole about 30 feet tall and he would start to swing back and forth sort of like an inverted swing. I saw this and was fearful about what eventually did happen; the pole snapped when he was headed down and he was badly injured. The bottom line is that the material is strong but not trsutworthy over time in spring situations.
