WRT Klemperer and the baton, I checked in Heywood last night and the
situation is this.

In January 1969, while recording Mahler 9 with the NPO, OK "idly picked up"
a baton he found in the studio, something he had not used "in over thirty
years".

He thought things were better with, althoguh daughter Lotte thought his
hands were more expressive.

He polled the orchestra who were around equally divided.  Nevertheless he
continued to use a baton for the rest of his career.
