My brother has been continuously beefing up his home entertainment
system, and recently bought a Sony state-of-the-art DVD player. This
player also will decode high definition compatible digital (HDCD) and
discs created using the esoteric 24-bit, 96 kHz sampling rate (commonly
known as just "24/96" or DAD). I'm aware of Reference Recordings releases
of HDCD CDs, and I notice the new Hildegard from Sequentia is also HDCD
encoded (a listing, as well as a description of the technology, can be
found at http://www.hdcd.com/), and I already have many of these discs.
Some new soundtracks are getting the HDCD treatment. I read an article on
an outfit called "Classic Records" (http://www.classicrecs.com/) that is
releasing 24/96 recordings. A visit to their web site shows a handful of
discs available, interestingly, all made from Vox masters.
I'll be going to visit my brother next week, and I'm wondering if anyone
is familiar with any classical releases in the HDCD format that aren't
listed at the site (unlikely) or, more importantly, any other releases in
the 24/96 format I should be looking into. I've never heard any of these
discs on a system designed to handle this technology, and I'm looking
forward to auditioning a number of discs if I can. How about commonly
rentable DVDs [perferably in Dolby Digital (AC-3) format] of classical
performances or related programs? Any suggestions?
Dave
