Steve Schwartz (as usual) gets right to the heart of the matter in his
complementary review of the Orion Ensembles' "Twilight of the Romantics".
What Steve didn't mention, probably in the interest of keeping his review
brief, was some background info on the Orions'. Since the Ensemble is
a local Chicago-area group whom I know well and since they've performed
on one of the chamber series I produce, I feel that a little introduction
is called for:
The Orion Ensemble has been performing for the last (15) years and was
initially formed by the superb clarinetist Kathryne Pirtle, violinist
Florentina Ramniceanu and pianist Diana Schmuck. The Ensemble now also
includes cellist Judy Stone and violist Jennifer Marlis. the members
are quite busy running (3) different chamber series in Chicago and
surrounding suburbs and can also often be seen sitting in at Chicago
Symphony concerts as "extras" or substitute musicians.
For more about this excellent group (or to order your copy of "Twilight
of the Romantics" directly from one of the musicians, please see their
website.
