Greetings to all from a long-time lurker from Delaware!
As far as Brahms piano concerto recordings go, my personal favorite has
to be Barenboim & Barbirolli on EMI. Particularly in the 1st concerto,
Barbirolli evokes a sense of... how to describe it?... dark, menacing
atmosphere, a sort of brooding deep rumble that supports the piano
brilliantly. Very unlike any other recording of this piece that I've
heard, but I like it.
I'm also quite fond of the Fleischer/Szell recording mentioned earlier,
although I more frequently turn to the slightly later Rudolf Serkin/Szell
set -- the Serkin was my introduction to the concertos, and the sound
is a bit clearer than the Fleischer. Kovacevich is also very fine if
you want modern sound.
Hope that helps! BTW, my sole experience with Barbirolli comes through
this Brahms recording & his Mahler symphonies, which are also quite
spiffy IMHO. Can anyone recommend other noteworthy Barbirolli recordings
that I should hunt down?
Thanks,
Bill Hill
