COMING UP ON NPR's WEEKEND PT APRIL 24 AND APRIL 25 1999
Saturday, APRIL 24
Hour 1-- Milestones of the Millennium--Handel's "Messiah": We continue
our countdown to the year 2001 with the 14th installment of PT's "Milestones
of the Millennium" series. Today, Harvard University professor and early
music specialist Thomas Kelly takes us back in time Dublin, Ireland for the
1742 premiere of George Frideric Handel's oratorio "Messiah."
Hour 2-- Strike Up the Band: From a concert last weekend at George Mason
University in Fairfax, Virginia, guest conductor Gunther Schuller leads
"The President's Own" United States Marine Band in a performance of his
own band transcription of the "Corsair" Overture by Hector Berlioz.
Sunday, APRIL 25
Hour 1-- Love Notes: Sometimes there's more to a piece of music than meets
the eye. We'll hear a case in point--the Sextet in G major for Strings by
Johannes Brahms. The composer wove the name of his newly-lost love, Agathe
von Siebold, into the theme of the first movement. From a concert two
weeks ago in Sun City, Arizona, we'll hear the Sextet performed by the
members of the Mendelssohn String Quartet--violinists Nick Eanet and
Nicholas Mann, violist Ulrich Eichenauer, and cellist Marcy Rosen--violist
Robert Mann and cellist Clive Greensmith.
Hour 2-- Basic Bartok: PT critic Ted Libbey joins host Lisa Simeone for a
visit to the 20th-century wing of PT's Basic Record Library. Today Ted
recommends three outstanding recordings of the Concerto for Orchestra by
Bela Bartok.
COMING UP ON NPR's PERFORMANCE TODAY APRIL 26--MAY 3, 1999
LISA SIMEONE IS HOST
Monday, APRIL 26
Hour 1-- A Temirkanov sneak preview: Conductor Yuri Temirkanov has a new
job in the Old Line State--he'll become the music director of the Baltimore
Symphony in September. Last month he gave concert-goers a preview of
what's to come. He joined the BSO to conduct a program of music by
Beethoven, Berlioz, and Barber, and we'll hear one of the concert
highlights, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7.
Hour 2-- American Orchestras: In this hour, we'll hear the highlight of
the weekend's concerts at the Virginia Waterfront International Arts
Festival in Norfolk. The Virginia Symphony and Music Director JoAnn
Falletta perform the Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra by Benjamin
Britten, with our own Lisa Simeone as narrator.
Tuesday, APRIL 27
Hour 1-- Isaac Stern in Germany: Commentator David Schoenbaum gives a
first-hand account of Isaac Stern's masterclass in Cologne earlier this
month. This event was part of the 78-year-old violinist's first visit to
Germany.
Hour 2-- How Composers Get their Music Performed: It's one thing to write
music--it's another to get it performed. In today's edition of Coming to
Terms, PT commentator Miles Hoffman and Lisa talk about how composers
manage the far-from-simple task of reaching audiences with their music.
We'll also hear about the experiences of four successful composers:
Lowell Liebermann, Libby Larsen, Max Raimi and Bruce Adolphe.
Wednesday, APRIL 28
Hour 1-- Milestones of the Millennium--Percussion: The sound of music
has changed over the last thousand years. And the proof can be found in
the percussion section of the orchestra. For today's "Milestones of the
Millennium," Lisa welcomes the members of the percussion ensemble Nexus to
Studio 4A. They'll play music by Mozart, traditional African dances and
rags, and talk with Lisa about how percussion has evolved over the last
1000 years.
Hour 2-- Concerts around the country: In this hour, we'll feature a recent
orchestral or chamber music performance.
Thursday, APRIL 29
Hour 1-- Happy 100th, Duke!: Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington was born 100
years ago today in Washington, DC. Our hour-long tribute to Ellington,
winner of a special 1999 Pulitzer Prize, includes an examination by Indiana
University music professor David Baker of Ellington's classical music
legacy.
Hour 2-- Basic Prokofiev: Ted Libbey joins Lisa for a visit to the PT
Basic Record Library. Throughout 1999, Ted is adding recordings of
20th-century music to the collection, and today he recommends outstanding
recordings of Sergei Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5.
Friday, APRIL 30
Hour 1-- Zwilich on Zwilich: Composer Ellen Taaffe Zwilich's life is
filled with firsts: she was the first woman to earn a doctoral degree from
Juilliard, her Symphony No. 1 made her the first woman to win the Pulitzer
Prize for Music, and she is the first American to have her work premiered
in Russia. On her 60th birthday, Zwilich talks with Lisa about her life,
her music, and other firsts that may be in her future.
Hour 2-- In this hour, we'll feature a recent orchestral or chamber music
performance.
