It is said that Roosevelt's favorite piece was the Largo from Dvorak's
New World, and that he requested in his will that it be played at his
funeral (Irony here is that his will was not opened until after he had been
interred - the source does not indicate what was played instead). I have
always felt that piece, if not the whole symphony, would be a better choice
for the 4th of July Esplanade concert. When I hear that first moveent I
recall musical moments, it seems, many movies from the thirties and forties
- I can almost hear the riverboat coming round the bend, and even though
Dvorak took a lot from Rumanian folk tunes, I wonder how much of that work
has influenced what we consider "orchestral" evocative music for American
westerns (and southerns) of that period.
