I guess it is the first time in two years I must disagree with Steve.
This is of course a matter of taste, but I believe that Davrath is the best
choice in this repertoire. It is also (to my knowledge) the only complete
version of the 'Chants d'Auvergne' and of the 'Chants paysans et du pays
basque', although I agree that it would be difficult to listen to the whole
set (2 CDs) at once.
Los Angeles, Te Kanawa, von Stade, Upshaw - all of them excellent in this
music - still remain prime donne. And these songs are not written for
prime donne, but are to be sung as if they had been written for young
peasants of the Auvergne!
So these singers will never be as spontaneous, mischievous, graceful and
pure as Nethania Davrath. She has the voice of a young girl, but the
technique of a professional diva. Her diction is also perfect. I don't
want more!
I also appreciate very much Davrath in her selection of Russian songs,
in Mahler's 4th with Abravanel (ideal for her 'himmliche Stimme') and
in Villa-Lobos' 'Bachianas brasileiras' Nr.5.
