Ives used hymn tunes in lots of his works, notably Symphony #2. Henry
Cowell wrote lots of hymn-like sections and compositions (e.g., his Hymns
and Fuging [sic] Tunes), but I don't know if he used pre-existing melodies
or wrote his own. William Schuman's "New England Triptych" uses William
Billings' "Chester," a song that definitely has the feel and tie to God of
a hymn even if it may not officially be one.
