For me, your response captures the problem.
I am reminded of a conversation I had with the Executive Director of the
Houston Symphony. We maintain the broadcast archive of the orchestra.
Some of the orchestra members developed an initiative to put out a set of
broadcast performances of the orchestra. Management was not supportive of
the initiative. "Those things always lose money." I thought of responding,
well how many of your concerts make money...
In some ways it seems odd to me that a frequent phrase I have heard coming
from Board meetings is, "we need to remember that this is a business." Yet
I see very little sense of an understanding of what they see as their
product.
