DIRECTOR, COALITION FOR SCIENCE AFTER SCHOOL
The Exploratorium is a not-for-profit museum dedicated to the public
understanding of science, art, and human perception. It has pioneered the
role of museums as active teaching centers with original programming based
on an interactive approach to learning. It serves as an interdisciplinary
resource for schools, universities, scientists, and artists, as well as for
the public.

SUMMARY
The Coalition for Science After School is a group of 50 national
organizations committed to expanding opportunities for high quality science
programs for youth participating in after-school programs. The Coalition
was formed in 2004, at a National Science Foundation-funded conference
organized by the Exploratorium, the Lawrence Hall of Science, and
TERC. The Coalition focuses on policy, advocacy, and networking for
strengthening science in after-school settings. It is governed by a
steering committee with representatives from 15 different organizations
(see attached) representing youth development, science education, and
education research organizations. Based on two multi-day meetings, the
Coalition is developing a roadmap for building the infrastructure needed
for supporting and strengthening science in after-school settings
The Exploratorium provides an institutional base, including administrative
support structures, for the Coalition. This position of Director is funded
for 12 months. A primary responsibility of the Director will be to secure
additional funding to support the continuation of the Coalition and the
Directorship. The Director of the Coalition will report to the Associate
Director of the Center for Teaching and Learning at the Exploratorium, and
will work closely with the Chair of the Executive Steering Group of the
Coalition, a rotating position currently held by Dr Elizabeth Stage,
Director of the Lawrence Hall of Science. The Director will confer with
the Director of Development at the Exploratorium about fundraising and
development issues.
The Coalition seeks an energetic, visionary, experienced leader who can
support the growth and development of this budding coalition.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
· Developing the Coalition and maintaining its momentum
· Representing the Coalition, with secondary ties to the lead
agencies of the Coalition.
· Securing funding to support Coalition administration,
advocacy, and policy work.
· Developing collaborative cross-organizational projects that
advance the work of the
Coalition.
· Leading policy and advocacy work to build political and
funding support as well as next
steps for the Coalition.
· Coordinating steering group activities, meetings, and progress.
· Developing strategic, business, communications and
dissemination plans.
· Working closely with the Directors of Development and other
key staff at the lead Coalition institutions to promote cooperative
fundraising efforts while preventing conflicts in this arena, as well as
fostering advice and support of mutual goals.
QUALIFICATIONS
· Experience directing nonprofit projects or organizations.
· Proven track record building teams and coalitions.
· Fundraising experience.
· Knowledge of youth development/after-school policy arena.
· Experience with DC-based education and or youth development
programs, organizations, and funding.
· Ability to work with multiple organizations, personalities, and
levels of expertise.
· Experience in after-school programs preferred.
· Science education experience preferred.
· Advanced degree preferred.
· Ability to travel 20-25% of the time.
