As to Mendelssohn, I personally find myself responding much more to his
f minor string quartet and B-flat major string quintet than to the music
of his youth, great though that is. The former is to me the music of
a composer of whom it could not be said he never "fully utilized" his
genius... genius that, more than potential, calls to me fully realized
from every bar of the f minor quartet. A personal opinion only, though.
