Roger Hecht summed up pretty much what I think of Lloyd's music,
although I have more time for the concertos than Roger does. I'd add
to his recommendations the wonderfully elegiac Cello Concerto, which
I think is the most recent of Lloyd's works to appear on Albany. The
tenth symphony is for brass only.
To my knowledge, only the 4th, 5th and 8th symphonies were released
by Lyrita, all in the twilight years of LP, and all conducted by Edward
Downes. I believe that these will be re-released on CD quite soon. All
are marginally superior to the Albany versions conducted by Lloyd, both
as performances and recordings. I have long hoped for a Proms performance
of the 4th conducted by Downes to appear on BBC Legends: I think it much
the best I've heard.
