Lendvai's claims about Bartok's use of the golden section have been
completely and thoroughly debunked by scholars.  It's true that for a
while pretty much everybody believed him.

I gather you have been reading Yvar Grattan-Guiness.  His article on
numerology and gematria in Die Zauberfloete is certainly the most idiotic
things ever written about Mozart by an otherwise respectable scholar.  All
he says is sheer unadulterated nonsense, a figment of his imagination.  I
was truly sorry to see that monstrosity of his.
