Is the 1997 Neujahr's Konzert by the Vienna far enough off the beaten
path? As far as I'm concerned Muti deservedly enjoys star billing. He
was great in Philadelphia and I've had the pleasure of repeatedly hearing
him conduct at La Scala. He's a bit retro in his off-podium manner which
finally caused him grief with the union in Milan.Today an op piece in
the Sueddeutsche Zeitung of Munich somewhat archly wondered how Muti
would make out in those predictable Kaffeeklatsches with the Chicago
patronesses. I was tempted to write in that Philly must have broken him
into that and, besides, he is the very model of a salon lion. Great
musician.
