Hi Richard
There are published trade catalogues from various Scottish pipe-makers, most
of whom were the major exporters for the British Empire and beyond in the
late 19th century.
The following list a Ben Nevis Cutty. The full reference is DB Gallagher
[1987] 'The 1900 list of the Pipe Maker's Society' in Peter Davey [ed.] The
archaeology of the Clay Tobacco Pipe X. Scotland, BAR British Series 178.

An illustrated catalogue of Davidson products in the article before the
price list shows nos 105 and 177.
From their position in the price lists, which seem to be numbered
consecutively as new products are added, and which feature topical pipes
like 'Garibaldi' and 'Parnell', you can get a relative date. As a rough
estimate the earliest are probably 1850s or 60s [low numbers above] for
original makers and late starters also frequently stole designs and added
them to their range. The later, more decorative, examples are from c.1880s
positions in the lists.
cheers
Denis
