Ah, computer databases for classical collections... a subject near
and dear to my heart. It's no secret I've been at this a while now.
I started my relational database work for my collection in 1984, and
have since spent thousands of hours on it. About a decade ago I migrated
my database to Microsoft Access and have been using it ever since.
ClassiCat is an excellent product, and has been uniformly well-reviewed
over the years. My design is different though. I don't care about
"tracks", or even movements. I care about keeping track of the pieces,
the performers, and the recordings. My design is very rich, however,
with a the ability to enter quite a lot of info, and even album cover
images.
I'm willing to make my design available to interested parties. As I
have devoted tens of thousands of hours to this effort, I don't make
this offer lightly. But I do so in the hope that it can perhaps be
made even more useful. I'm thinking there may be a migration path from
ClassiCat's Jet (it's NOT Access!) database engine into my design. And
my Visual Basic skills are nonexistent, so my forms are crude (I generally
just work with the tables directly). All I would ask is that any
improvements, new forms, etc. be shared.
In addition to my basic table and form design, I'm also willing to
pre-stock the database with data in the following areas:
Composers 2262
Ensembles 1759
Performers 6836
Directors 1141
Labels 580
My design is a little complex, and probably not for the faint of heart,
but if you are interest, drop me a line directly at [log in to unmask]
You will need Microsoft Access 2000 or better to read my files, though
I can perhaps make a version for older Access releases if that would be
useful.
I'm really swamped right now, so much may not happen until next week,
but don't hesitate to write if you are interested.
Dave
