Tidbit on Pynchon- He is a Rossini fan, so far as I know. The more or
less famous quote form the Gravity's Rainbow comparing Beethoven 9th
with Rossini had greeted my local intranet users for months.

About a music being 60% being over one's head and still enjoying it. 
I had heard the Ring for the first time when I was 15 (everyday, morning
and afternoon, in Bayreuth), at 52 I still think it is way over my head-
can't give the percentage- and amstill listening to it.
