My name is Katie Reilley and I am a junior nursing student at the Univerity of North Dakota. I chose to join this listserv because I am interested in attaining more knowledge on breastfeeding and would like to be able to provide information to patients that I may have in the future. A topic that was brought to me by one of my patients that I am following is the issue of listeria monocytogenes and pregnancy. Listeria during pregnancy can be devistating to not only the mother but the fetus as well as it may cause stillbirth (Begley, 2002). This issue brought me to question the impact of listeria monocytogenes on breastfeeding. The vast majority of cases, an infectious disease in the mother is not a contraindication to breastfeeding. However, listeria monocytogenes can be transmitted through breastmilk. I found this topic to be difficult to research and was wondering if anyone had any information regarding listeria and breastfeeding (Jones, 2001). The effects of listeriosis foll
owing a maternal infection in pregnancy remains unclear (Chapman, 1986). I am also wondering if anyone has come across this topic in clinical practice. Thank you for your time.
