I heard a curious work on the radio this morning: 9 Cadenzas by Brahms
written for Piano Concertos by Bach, Mozart and Beethoven. Idel Biret
gave an impressive performance, but I was wondering if this piece is
ever performed in a recital, i.e. as a stand-alone piece?
I must say to me it sounded a bit odd, with no real link between the
different cadenzas, except that the cadenza to the Bach Concerto sounded
completely different than the rest. I suppose that if you can extract
music from operas, etc into suites, you can do the same for cadenzas.
I would be interested in hearing other listeners opinion on this.
