Dave Harman replies to me:

>I consider the last movement of the Mahler 3rd to be one of the most
>sublime pieces Mahler ever penned.

Dave isn't the first person I've heard say this. But I simply don't get
it. I'm a big Mahler fan, and I've tried to like the last movement of
the third, but every time I listen to it I lose interest. I wonder if
it's because it sounds unconvincing to me, like a bad acting performance.

For tenderness and deep emotion, I think Mahler got it right in in the
3rd movement of the 4th.
