Bernard Chasan responds to Todd Michel McComb:

I agree with Bernard, and Cooper's Schubert series on Ottavo has garnered
much praise from reviewers. Let's also not forget that her mentor Alfred
Brendel is no slouch in Schubert's late sonatas. On fortepiano, Malcolm
Bilson/Hungaroton and Andreas Staier/Teldec are my preferred versions
for the late sonatas.
Concerning Richter, I do caution readers that his Schubert performances
tend to be very slow. I love them but can imagine some folks getting
totally frustrated with the tempos. Another slow-poke is Marta Deyanova
on Nimbus. Listening to Richter and Deyanova side-by-side gives us a
good picture of greatness vs. competence.
