His chamber music with Casals and Thibaud is a must hear. For an
ear-opening experience get the Archduke on Naxos 8.110195 AND the 'same'
recording on EMI 67001 (GROC series). They are differently coupled and
the difference in the recording remasterings is just staggering...almost
as if they are two different recordings.
Cortot also made some recordings as a conductor. A recent issue of
"Gramophone" referred to one such release.
Cortot fell out of favor because of his political affiliation with the
Nazi's.
If you like Cortot (though the two have nothing to do with one another
except for being French_ you should also check out Samson Francois.
There is a "Great Pianists" Philips release of solo music including
Bach/Busoni, Chopin, Debussy, etc. (456 778) and two GROC releases:
Chopin PCs (67261) and the Ravel concertos along with Gaspard (66957).
Francois had no such political kerfuffles but was considered too willful
in his approaches. If that is so, then I like willful.
