Then there is the ever-present hand or foot-powered generator.....

These are fun and do teach that it takes mechanical energy to make electrical energy with this sort of device. However, most fail to show the science behind what makes them work. Anyone out there know of examples that do get at the basic science of electro-magnetic generators? We ended up building a separate exhibit that replicates Faraday's 1831 experiment with moving magnets and coils of wire.
