I started piano lessons when I was five, with my mother, and the
first piece I learned to play well enough to play for people was a
simple version of 'Oh We Sail the Ocean Blue' from HMS Pinafore. But
the first piece that truly inspired me was Liszt's 'Les Preludes' on an
early LP. I don't remember who played it. But I remember getting it
for Christmas and spending the rest of the holiday listening to it and
-- a weird memory even now after sixty years -- eating Nabisco's Wheat
Thins out of the box. When I smell Wheat Thins I think of Liszt.:-)
