I suppose computers have eliminated the margin of error in calculating
distances from photographs, but a word of caution is in order for those who try to
do this by seat of the pants. California State Parks, Planning Division, used
an historical photo to scale the size of the flagpole at Old San Diego and
then created what they believed to be an accurate representation. This was
done before computers, about thirty years ago. The problem is the angles of the
photos are slightly distorted and many people over the years have concluded
the modern flagpole is many times larger than the historical one. (Of course,
State Parks employees hotly defend the flagpole as accurate.) Just a thought.
