South Central Historical Archaeology Conference (SCHAC 8)
October 27-29, 2006
Memphis, Tennessee

SCHAC is back on track!!

The conference will be held in Memphis on October 27-29, 2006, so now
is the time to make arrangements. In the tradition of past meetings,
this year's conference promises to be a memorable experience.

Call for Papers

Papers can be 15-20 minutes in length on any topic related to
historical archaeology in the region. Posters are welcome. Abstracts
should be submitted to Guy Weaver, Conference Organizer
([log in to unmask]) by September 30, 2005.

Tentative Schedule

Conference registration and a business meeting will be held Friday
afternoon, October 27, between 5:00 and 7:00 pm. The meeting will be
held at the Historic Kress Building on Main Street, downtown Memphis.

This year, the conference will be hosted by Rhodes College, located at
2000 North Parkway in Midtown, Memphis. Papers will be presented on
Saturday, October 28, between 9 am and 5 pm, at the Blount Auditorium
in Buckman Hall on the Rhodes campus. Directions to Rhodes can be

On Sunday, October 29, Michael "Smoke" Pfeiffer will lead a workshop
on tobacco pipes between 9 am and 12 pm. The workshop will be held at
the new Archaeology Lab at 101 Kennedy Hall on the Rhodes campus.

October 23-28 is "Archaeology Week" at Rhodes College. Other speakers
scheduled for presentations on campus include Dr. Michael Glasscock,
of the Archaeometry Laboratory at University of Missouri on October
23. On October 25, Dr. Theresa Singleton of Syracuse U. will speak on
African American Archaeology.

Hotel Arrangements

This year, participants have a choice of lodging. The conference hotel
will be the Spring Hill Suites by Marriott
(http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/MEMMP), located at 21 North
Main Street, Memphis. The hotel is in the heart of downtown, on the
trolley line, and only minutes from Beale Street, world-class
restaurants, and the South Main Arts District. A block of 15 rooms has
been reserved at Spring Hill Suites and the Historic Kress Building,
located next door. The special group rate is $139.00 per night at the
Spring Hill and $169 per night at the Historic Kress for a spacious
king or two queen bedded suite with pull-out sofa bed. All guest room
rates are subject to applicable taxes (currently 15.95%). Parking is
available for a $5.00 fee per day per vehicle. For reservations, call
the hotel directly at 901-522-2100 or 1-800-593-6415 before September
27, 2006 -- after that date, the rooms may no longer be set aside.
Remember to mention SCHAC when you reserve your room.

For those on a budget, a block of 15 rooms has also been reserved at
the Folgelman Executive Conference Center on the campus of the
University of Memphis. The special group rate is $85.00 per night for
a single queen bed. All guest room rates are subject to applicable
taxes (currently 15.95%). For reservations, call the hotel directly at
901-678-5410 by October 13, 2006. Be sure to mention SCHAC when you
