I have a friend whose grandfather left a European country and passed through
Ellis Island. There was a man sitting at a table with an open book and a pen
in his hand. Another man next to him translated. The grandfather identified
himself in his native language. The man with the pen asked the translator, "What
does his name mean?" To which the translator replied, "apple." The man with
the pen entered the name of the grandfather as "Mr. Apple." Two generations of
Apples now exist in the United States because of that transaction.
