There is an old blacksmith and wheelwright's shop in Boalsburg, PA that
was left standing, with all its tools and parts intact, when the owner
closed up shop at least a century ago. It is still opened and used in
demonstrations once or twide a year. It is in a frame building, with a
wooden floor. I think there may be a small skirt of brick flooring
around the base of the forge, but if so, it is small and does not extend
to the anvil area. There is a coal bin set in the corner beyond the
forge. The anvil is set on a block, but I never observed how it sat
on/in the wooden floor. I'll have to look next time it's in operation.
Could the circular pit that was mentioned in one posting be for a
quenching tub of water, rather than an anvil base?
