JOB ANNOUCEMENT—Historic St. Mary’s City, Maryland
Archaeological Conservation Assistant:
A conservation assistant is sought to work in a team to perform a box by
box survey of the archaeological collections housed at Historic St. Mary’s
City, St. Mary’s, Maryland. The assistant will be supervised by the HSMC
Laboratory Director and Curator of Collections. The survey will include
examination of each box, shelf, and/ or drawer of artifacts and recordation
of information into a prescribed computer database using Microsoft Access.
The assistant will examine the current packaging and condition of the
artifacts, and provide information regarding the future needs of the
collections. In addition, the assistant will perform a simultaneous
condition survey of the artifacts under supervision of the Project
Conservator, and will record information regarding the future conservation
needs of the collections. Other duties include updating the artifact
inventory as instructed, repackaging objects in immediate danger using
archivally stable materials, producing charts and tables from the database,
changing silica-gel in micro-environments if necessary, and coordinating
and communicating with the Project Conservator regarding individual and
unique object needs and conditions. The assistant may be asked to work with
students and/or interns on the project. Additionally, the assistant will
contribute to both the final report which will be produced at the end of
the project as well as assist with the creation of an educational brochure
on archaeological conservation which will be published on both the web and
in hard format for distribution to the public, educators, archaeologists
and other museum professionals.
The position will commence in the Fall of 2004 when a qualified applicant
is chosen and will continue for 1507 hours (approx. 37.5 weeks) at
$13.50/hour. No benefits are offered, but assistance finding housing is
