The purported smashing of George Fox's gravemarker is interesting.  In
Shrewsbury, New Jersey, a Mr. Parker, enraged at the placement of
gravestones in the local friends burial ground smashed several stones and
threw them in the road.  This is recorded in the minutes of the Shrewsbury
Meeting and occurred in the 18th century.  Despite Mr. Parker's efforts,
several small unornamented gravemarkers dating from the mid-1700s survive
in Shrewsbury, and making matters even more confusing there is a very nice
Newark style mortality image in the same burial ground.  Similarly, in
Woodbridge, New Jersey, friends were unhappy that some of their brethren
were using "ornate" gravemarkers and asked that the markers be removed
from the burial ground.  They too were moved.  This also occurred in the
18th century.
