The majority of bees used are cerana, but some mellifrea were 'imported'
from N India when Thai Sac Brood Virus wiped out 95% of cerana in the early
1990s. Cerana numbers have rebounded and are now showing good resistance to
TSBV (lesson for everyone here!), but mellifera struggles in what is really
an unsuitable environment. The attraction is the larger crop from
mellifera.
