Walnut wood and the hulls contain juglone, which is a phytochemical that has
a variety of effects on animals and humans. Shavings and sawdust from the
wood are known to repel, if not kill, insects. Juglones are toxic to horses
and can cause allergic reactions in humans. They kill certain plants that
try to grow near them. I'd avoid walnut products if a good alternative
bedding is available. We use cypress shavings for some critters.

Does anyone on the list have experience with using crushed walnut shells
as a bedding material for animals (in our case, a lizard) and then
having an allergic reaction from someone handling the animal?  So many
kids have severe peanut allergies, it makes you think twice about using
any kind of nut.
