In the article they mention "mite population levels"
and "mite infestation levels", I don’t see where they
specify the method of how mite levels were determined.
But I would assume that the method used would likely
have been bee samples rather than mite drops because
this would be the only way to accurately determine
actual mite levels. For example, counting mites drops
might reflect grooming behavior and researchers would
be aware of this fact.
